The Department of Biological Sciences at East Stroudsburg University offers several programs among them B.S. in Biotechnology and B.S. in Clinical laboratory sciences (Medical technology). For a comprehensive list of resources and services available to current and prospective students, please choose your program of interest.
The Medical Technology program, also known as “Clinical Laboratory Science”, is designed to provide students with preparation in fundamental and clinical laboratory sciences for careers in diagnostic clinical laboratories. The medical technologist uses state-of-the-art technology to perform analysis of patient samples (blood and other materials) that are useful in detecting and/or treating diseases. After testing and examining a specimen, they analyze the results and relay them to physicians. Medical Technologists also oversee the performance of thousands of types of medical laboratory tests using a wide variety of precision instruments. They may also conduct research and develop scientific methods to advance the study of disease processes.

The Biotechnology program at East Stroudsburg University was developed in response to student interest and the need for qualified, well trained graduates in the new emerging field of Biotechnology. Biotechnology harnesses cellular and biomolecular processes to develop technologies and products that help improve our lives and the health of our planet. Modern biotechnology provides breakthrough products and technologies to combat debilitating and rare diseases, reduces our environmental footprint, feeds the hungry, uses less and cleaner energy, and have safer, cleaner and more efficient industrial manufacturing processes. The Biotechnology program is one of the first of its kind in Pennsylvania. It serves the needs of northeast Pennsylvania, northwestern New Jersey and the Lehigh Valley where there is an accelerating growth of biotechnology clusters. This gives the department a chance to be a leader in this field. As has been recognized by the national science and technology council, the powerful tools of biotechnology have revolutionized medicine, agriculture, and environmental protection . . . but biotechnology is about more than jobs and economy; it provides the means for a vastly improved quality of life for all Americans and the world.
