PITTSBURGH – East Stroudsburg University's quest for a second Division II Field Hockey Championship in the last four years came up one goal short.

Emily Stauffer deflected a shot by Adrienne McGarrigle into the back of the cage 1:16 into overtime to give Shippensburg a 1-0 victory over the Warriors in Saturday's NCAA final. The Raiders (19-4) claim their third-straight national championship, while ESU's season ends with a final record of 16-5.

"I'm really proud of our young ladies and the season that they had," head coach Sandy Miller said. "Getting to the NCAA finals is a super accomplishment. Obviously we're sad that we weren't able to win it, but what this program has accomplished in the last four years is pretty phenomenal."

The Warriors advanced to the DII tournament in each of the past four seasons, winning the title in 2015 and advancing to the Final Four in three of the four years. ESU has qualified for NCAA's in six of the last 10 seasons overall.

With temperatures in the low 40's and a steady rain throughout, scoring chances were few and far between for both sides this afternoon. Senior Kelli Shapiro had the game's first two shots, as she forced saves from Shippensburg goalie Ally Mooney in the fifth and eighth minutes of the contest.

Shippensburg's Jazmin Petrantonio then sent an effort wide at 15:44. After that attempt, neither side managed a shot until there were less than three minutes remaining in regulation.

There were four yellow cards in the contest, including a 10-minute card for Petrantonio midway through the second half that the Raiders were able to overcome. ESU held Petrantonio, who scored 28 goals and was named 2018 PSAC Athlete of the Year, to three shots overall, none of which were on target.

Shippensburg had four penalty corners and three shots over the final five minutes of the second half. A defensive save by junior Briana Sassaman with 2:54 left on the clock helped extend the game into overtime.

Stauffer's game-winner was her 10th of the season, while McGarrigle picked up her fifth assist.

ESU's senior class of Shapiro, Ashley Ceschini, Paige Harrold, Makenna Marhefka, Bailey Quinn, Karisa Turner and Amanda Crampton competed in their final collegiate game. They went 67-18 during their four years at ESU and reached the national tournament every season. Those 67 victories are the most by a four-year class in program history, eclipsing the 62-win total by last year's seniors.

"I'm really proud of our seniors," Miller concluded. "To make the tournament every year is pretty much unheard of, and it's a testament to this class. That's one of the many positives that we'll take away from this experience."
