ESU Student Talks About the Impact of Scholarship on Infinite Opportunities

Kristina Arvelo, a senior biology major at East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania, will talk about how the scholarship she received enabled her to attend college on this week’s edition of Infinite Opportunities. Arvelo says she would not have been able to attend ESU without the scholarship she is receiving from Sanofi Pasteur.

This week’s episode also will include video visits to the campuses of Kutztown and Millersville Universities of Pennsylvania, as the program explores private giving and how it benefits students who attend Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education.

Political Science Students Set to Present at Harvard Conference

Two political science students of East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania’s college of arts and sciences will present research at the International Conference on Interdisciplinary Social Science Studies at Harvard University in Boston, Mass., April 24 – 26.

Kimberly S. Adams, Ph.D., professor of political science, informed political science majors Christian Colon, a senior from Bethlehem, Pa. and Leah Walsh, a junior from Scranton, Pa. of the conference. “The overall objective of this conference is to provide a platform and stimulate discussion on key interdisciplinary social science issues affecting law, international relations, business management, psychology, criminology, sociology and education,” Dr. Adams said. For her students, it is a chance to engage in meaningful discussions and showcase their talent.

Department of Theatre to Present Comedy/Sci-Fi Rock Musical Little Shop of Horrors

East Stroudsburg University’s Department of Theatre will be presenting the rock musical April 19-23 in the Smith-McFarland Theatre of the university’s Fine and Performing Arts Center, Normal and Marguerite streets, East Stroudsburg.

Songs by writer Howard Ashman and composer Alan Menken, the creative team for such Disney classics as Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast, helped to make Little Shop of Horrors into a long-running, Off-Broadway hit.

ESU Students Present to the PASSHE Board of Governors

East Stroudsburg University students, faculty and administration were present at the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education’s quarterly Board of Governors Meeting on Thursday, April 6, 2017. Graduate student Blaise Delfino spoke to the board about his experiences in the PASSHE Business Plan Competition. Delfino won the competition in 2016 and has since had much success launching his business, Fader Plugs. Members of ESU’s student run design agency, New Mind Design presented to the board about work they have done individual clients within the regional community, including the design and building of a prosthetic leg for a duck.

Yvonne Troiani Sweeney Lecture Series for Nursing Enrichment Held at ESU

The Yvonne Troiani Sweeney Endowed Lecture Series for Nursing Enrichment at ESU was held in the ESU Innovation Center on Thursday, April 6. This year’s keynote address by Glen R. Finney, M.D. was titled “21st Century Cognitive Care.”  Yvonne Troiani Sweeney’78 dedicated her life to her nursing career that spanned 30 years until she was diagnosed with a form of early onset dementia called posterior cortical atrophy. In 2014 her sister, Linda Niedbala ’83, with the help of her husband, Sam Niedbala ’82, started the lecture series in her honor.

Darlene Farris-LaBar has loved creating and making items for as long as she can remember. As a little girl, she tinkered with her mom’s sewing machine after school when she wasn’t taking a watch apart just to see if she could put it back together. As decades have passed, Farris-LaBar’s knowledge has drastically increased, and she has made a name for herself in the 3D printing world.

Madelon Powers Gallery to Present Senior Seminar and Portfolio in Art Student Exhibition

East Stroudsburg University’s Madelon Powers Gallery will feature art works and portfolios of selected students in a Senior Seminar and Portfolio in Art Student Exhibition April 12-May 4.

The exhibition also will include works produced by the art + design department’s student design agency, New Mind Design; comic art created at recent Comic Thons; sketches from the Drawing II class, and other selected student works.

Winners of Student Art Association Annual Juried Student Art Exhibition

Prizes were awarded recently to the top artists in the East Stroudsburg University Student Art Association Annual Juried Student Art Exhibition.

Gavel for Ruth Bader Ginsberg, a 3-D printed work by Alyssa Gonzalez, a sophomore from Allentown, Pa. majoring in art + design, earned the “best in show” award and also the prize for the best three-dimensional piece in the exhibit.

Debate Team Tackles Hate Speech on College Campuses

Should hate speech be allowed on college campuses? That’s the topic 22 teams from seven universities within the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education will debate at this year’s Fredrick Douglass Institute Collaborative Debate Tournament on Friday, April 7. The championship debate will take place from 4 – 5 p.m. in the Student Senate Chambers located in the University Center on ESU’s campus.
