The Dale and Frances Hughes Cancer Center and East Stroudsburg University Health Services kick off Breast Cancer Awareness Month with the 16th Annual Pink Light Walk

East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania (ESU) and Pocono Medical Center (PMC) will host the 16th annual Pink Light Walk on Thursday, October 6 at 6 p.m. In collaboration with PMC’s Dale and Frances Hughes Cancer Center, ESU Health Services, the American Cancer Society and Prime Time Health of Monroe County’s Area Agency on Aging, the walk is held each year to increase awareness for breast cancer during the month of October.

This year’s Pink Light Walk is organized by PMC’s Dale and Frances Hughes Cancer Center’s Breast Health Nurse Navigator, Lutchana Beckford, ESU’s director of health services, Maria Hackney, and a committee from both organizations and other members from the community. “As a long-standing tradition for Pocono Medical Center, the walk serves as a movement to unite those of the community battling breast cancer, survivors of breast cancer, or those interested in supporting breast cancer awareness to walk in unison,” said Beckford.

State System and APSCUF Resume Negotiations

Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education and the Association of Pennsylvania State College and University Faculties (APSCUF) will resume negotiations Thursday in Harrisburg.

“APSCUF has agreed to our request to meet on Sept. 29 and return to negotiations,” said State System spokesman Kenn Marshall. “We are ready to stay at the table until an agreement is reached. This is too important to our students and faculty, and we need to make progress. We look forward to continuing discussions and are hopeful we can move toward an agreement.”

ESU Receives $94,318 to Help Bolster College Readiness Programs

East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania (ESU) has received $94,318 as a result of two one year awards as part of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education’s participation in GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs). GEAR UP is a nationwide, college readiness grant initiative funded up the U.S. Department of Education.

ESU Professor of Psychology Bonnie Green, Ph.D. is working with the State System’s Office of the Chancellor as the research scientist for initiatives that will serve four underserved school districts in Pennsylvania – Allentown, Harrisburg, Lancaster and Norristown – to improve high school graduation and college attendance rates. Dr. Green’s student research team has been conducting research and creating measures for variables associated with academic achievement.

A Screening of “Out of Sight,” at ESU on September 27

The Department of Counseling and Psychological Services, University Health Services, and Wellness and Prevention have arranged for the screening of “Out of Sight”, a groundbreaking documentary that demystifies non-suicidal self-injurious behavior in people who struggle with mental health disorders including depression, anxiety, and eating disorders. The documentary will be screened on September 27 at 7 p.m. in the Niedbala Auditorium in the Warren E.’55 and Sandra Hoeffner Science and Technology Center. “Out of Sight” was awarded The Voice Award Honorable Mention and Best Feature Film at the Southside Film Festival.

Pocono Mountains’ Theater Company in Partnership with ESU Department of Theater to Present Staged Reading of Stet

STET, a new drama by Kim Davies, will open a series of three staged readings being presented this fall through a partnership between the Pocono Mountains’ Theater Company and East Stroudsburg University’s Department of Theatre.
