Chris Monasch has been named the Interim Director of Athletics at East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania, the school announced Tuesday.

Monasch was previously Director of Athletics at St. John’s University in Queens, N.Y. for 10 years and has also served as Commissioner of the America East Conference and Northeast Conference. He has also held positions at Seton Hall University in South Orange, N.J. as Associate Director of Athletics, and Fordham University in Bronx, N.Y. as Assistant Director of Athletics and Interim Director of Athletics. “We are excited about the breadth of experience that Chris Monasch brings to ESU as our Interim Director of Athletics,” said Doreen Tobin, D.Ed., Vice President of Student Affairs. “His professional experience as both an athletic director and conference commissioner in NCAA Division I will be an added benefit to ESU, our 20 varsity athletic programs and our student-athletes.”

Monasch graduated from St. John’s in 1981 with a bachelor’s degree in Athletic Administration, and Fordham in 1983 with a Master’s degree in Communications. He holds a Juris Doctorate from Seton Hall, which was conferred in 1993.

Prior to his tenure at St. John’s, which began in March 2005, Monasch was Commissioner of the America East Conference for eight years (1997-2005) and Commissioner of the Northeast Conference for 10 years (1987-1997). He began his career in athletic administration at Fordham in 1981 as Assistant Director of Athletics, and was Interim Director of Athletics for four months in 1985. He was Associate Director of Athletics at Seton Hall for two years before accepting his position with the Northeast Conference. Monasch has also served as an adjunct professor in sports law at Seton Hall, and in sport management at St. John’s.

He has held several positions on NCAA committees, including spots on the national organization’s Leadership Council and Management Council. Monasch is expected to remain as Interim Director of Athletics while a national search is underway for a permanent head of ESU’s Department of Athletics.
