Three members of the ESU communication department traveled to Pittsburgh to attend the 78th Annual Convention of the Pennsylvania Communication Association (PCA) held at Duquesne University on the weekend of September 30, 2017. PCA, one of the oldest regional academic organizations in the nation, promotes teaching, research, service and development in all areas of human communication.

ESU was one of five institutions in the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education to send representation to the conference. Other State System universities in attendance included Slippery Rock, Clarion, Indiana, and Edinboro Universities.

Cem Zeytinoglu, Ph.D., associate professor of communication, and Robert McKenzie, Ph.D., distinguished professor and chair of communication, presented on a panel sponsored by the Communication Education Interest Council. A recent graduate of ESU, and a former student of Dr. Zeytinoglu, Frankie Barrett ‘17, also presented in a poster session. Barrett is now a graduate student at the Duquesne University’s Master of Arts program in Rhetoric.

Zeytinoglu’s involvement with the PCA extends back 11 years, during which he has served as the editor to the association’s publication, Pennsylvania Communication Annual, and served as the president of the organization from 2011-2012.  He joined the ESU faculty in 2006 and teaches courses in public relations, rhetoric, and communication theory. He was awarded the Harvey Kelly Award for Excellence in Teaching by PCA in 2012 for outstanding teaching inside and outside the classroom, including innovative methods in the classroom, community based education, demonstrated impact and exceptional accomplishment.

This year, PCA honored Zeytinoglu with the Carroll Arnold Distinguished Service Award for his long and faithful service, outstanding teaching, and distinctive service. Zeytinoglu received the award from Dr. Janie Harden Fritz, a notable scholar in the field communication, who was one of his mentors in the past.
