East Stroudsburg University’s Theatre Department will present Closer, a stinging look at modern love and betrayal by Patrick Marber, April 17-22.

Winner of the 1998 Olivier Award for Best Play and the 1999 New York Drama Critics Circle Award for Best Foreign Play, “Closer is a sad, savvy, often funny play that casts a steely, unblinking gaze at the world of relationships and lets you come to your own conclusions,” according to the NY Magazine review.

In the drama, a quartet of characters struggle to find intimacy during 4 ½ years as they play pass-the-lover but, as their lives intertwine, they just can’t seem to get closer.

“Each character believes that they have a handle on the truth and that they know who they are,” noted director Susan P. O’Hearn, professor of theatre. “Yet, time and time again, we see them destroy any ability to recognize truth or to be close.”

Curtain times for the play are 8 p.m. April 17-21 and 2 p.m. April 22. All performances are at the Smith-McFarland Theatre of the university’s Fine and Performing Arts Center, Normal and Marguerite streets, East Stroudsburg. Because of adult language and content, this play is recommended for mature audiences only.

Yoshinori Tanokura, assistant professor of theatre, designed the sets and costumes for the production. Guest designer David Dougherty created the lighting for the piece.

General admission is $12; $10 for senior citizens, faculty & staff with ID; and $7 students with ID.
