Distinguished Professor – Dr. Jesse Moore
East Stroudsburg University bestows its highest faculty honor, the Distinguished Professor Award, upon Dr. Jesse C. Moore for his exemplary teaching ability and his wide and lasting impact upon the teaching of reading locally, statewide, and nationally.
Since his initial appointment to the ESU faculty in 1975 until his retirement in 2008, Dr. Moore led the Reading Department to a reputation for excellence in teacher preparation throughout the state. In addition to his role as full professor and chair of the Reading Department, Dr. Moore has been exceptionally active within his professional associations for reading educators, having served as president of the Keystone State Reading Association (KSRA) and on governmental relations committees for KSRA and the International Reading Association (IRA). Within these roles, he regularly presented testimony to the Pennsylvania State Board of Education on literacy issues and worked with the IRA to influence federal policy on reading. Dr. Moore consulted extensively with school districts throughout Pennsylvania and New Jersey, providing essential assistance in improving student achievement in reading.
Dr. Moore was always, first and foremost, an inspiring teacher. Teachers throughout our region have spoken highly of the impact he has had on their teaching and development as professionals. Dr. Moore was committed to modeling the best practices in education and was on the cutting edge of practice. In his later years at ESU he became involved in ESU’s professional development school efforts, working collaboratively with other ESU faculty to provide intensive, on-site teacher training at several local schools. He offered a summer reading clinic in Pocono Mountain School District where ESU graduate students tutor over 100 of the district’s pupils. Clearly, Dr. Moore has positively impacted the lives of a great number of undergraduate and graduate students, in-service teachers, and public school students, bringing recognition and accolades to ESU.
Dr. Moore received his B.A. in English from Ursinus College, and his M.A. and Ed.D. in reading education from Lehigh University. He retired in 2008 and was awarded Professor Emeritus status
