Graduating seniors Louis Wein and Anja Whitehead first walked onto the campus of East Stroudsburg University with a desire to get involved.

“Being a part of ESU’s campus and working with so many students has helped me grow as a person,” Wein said.

Like Wein, Whitehead has made her time at ESU about helping others. “I wanted to be a great ambassador for ESU throughout my time here. I want to continue to be an ESU ambassador after I graduate,” Whitehead said.

A passion for serving students and a dedication to the university earned both Wein and Whitehead the University Leadership Award at the spring commencement exercises on Saturday, May 5.

The University Leadership Award is presented to a graduating senior who has demonstrated leadership in student officer positions and in other extra-curricular activities. It is one of the highest non-academic honors a senior can receive. To be eligible, a student must have attended the university for at least two years and have a cumulative grade point average of 2.60 or above.

Both award recipients were immersed in student life during their time on campus.

Wein, a communication major from Schwenksville, Pa., was the public relations chair for Student Senate, president of the Warrior Elite student ambassador program, co-chair of the homecoming planning committee, secretary of the Moses Society, a resident advisor, orientation leader, a member of the community board for Hawthorn Suites, a member of the Warrior induction committee, and the student liaison for the Alumni Association board of directors. He also worked as a classroom assistant, a front desk receptionist in the office of residence life, an intern in the office of university relations and an office assistant in the office of the vice president of student affairs.

Whitehead, a digital media technologies major from Susquehanna, Pa., was a resident advisor where she served on the global committee and the resident curriculum committee; president of the National Broadcasting Society; a DJ on WESS, ESU’s student run radio station, where she interviewed author Jeannette Walls; a writer for the Stroud Courier; a member of the Moses society; staff training and development committee; a member of the Alpha Epsilon Rho Honor Society; and a member of the television production club. She has filmed projects including The Good Project, ESU’s Diversity Committee; and a live auction. Whitehead has represented ESU at two NBS national conventions, as a study abroad student in Australia, and during her time as an interview at WNEP, the local ABC affiliate.

ESU awarded 1,205 degrees at separate commencement exercises for undergraduate and graduate students on May 4 and 5.
