Opera enthusiast Eugene Galperin, Ph.D., East Stroudsburg University assistant professor of mathematics, will present Macbeth: The Play, the Opera, and the Film on October 8 at 7:00 p.m. This presentation will be held in the Dale Snow Theatre of ESU’s Fine & Performing Arts Center, Normal and Marguerite streets, East Stroudsburg.

In his talk, Galperin will discuss how 19th century Italian opera composer Giuseppe Verdi helped advance Shakespeare revival by creating Macbeth, his first true operatic masterpiece. Roman Polanski’s 1971 classic film adaptation will also be discussed in Galperin’s presentation, which is open to the public at no cost.

One of most famous of all of Shakespeare’s tragedies, Macbeth explores the corrosive psychological and political effects that follow when evil is chosen as a way to fulfill the ambition for power. Verdi’s dark-hued musical rendition of the classic story is the first genuine music drama in the history of western art.

The program, geared toward people with little or no knowledge of opera, will provide an introduction to the Metropolitan Opera production of Macbeth to be screened at 12:55 p.m. on October 11, and at 6:30 p.m. on October 15 at the Cinemark Theater in Stroud Mall. These Cinemark screenings are part of the Metropolitan Opera’s Live-in-HD series designed to make reputable opera productions accessible to audiences throughout the world.

“These broadcasts have been going on for years and most students haven’t been aware,” Galperin said. “I attempted to spark some interest and increase attendance of these broadcasts. Last year, I gave six such talks. As a result, several students and community members attended the broadcast for the first time.  That was encouraging, and I would like to keep it going.”

The presentation at ESU is being sponsored by the departments of music and theatre. For more information, please call Galperin at 570-422-3931.
