ESU Holds First Faculty Speed Networking Event

East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania held its first speed networking event in support of the Faculty Development and Research (FDR) Interdisciplinary Incentive Grant on Tuesday, September 30.

Hosted by ESU’s Office of the Provost and Office of Sponsored Projects and Research, the event provided the opportunity for faculty to discuss ideas for interdisciplinary research projects for December 2014 when four Interdisciplinary Incentive Grants of $4,350 each will be awarded. The grant is designed to stimulate interaction among academic disciplines, departments, and colleges to obtain data that is needed for submission of larger, external grants.

The process used in the speed networking event mimicked the popular speed dating method. Much like speed dating, faculty members were able to meet and talk over a series of timed, short interactions.

The networking event allowed faculty members to meet and share their ideas in an informal small group setting. “All the faculty were supportive and many encouraged others to contact colleagues who might be interested in each other’s work,” said Laurene Clossey, Ph.D., associate professor of sociology.

Many other universities have used a similar model to promote interdisciplinary work, including the University of Alabama, North Dakota State University, Columbia University, and the University of Pittsburgh.
