Over 40 students and seven faculty members from East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania’s department of speech-language pathology attended the annual convention of the Pennsylvania Speech-Language-Hearing Association (PSHA) in Harrisburg in March.  PSHA is the official state organization for speech and hearing professionals.

LuAnn Batson-Magnuson, Ph.D., assistant professor of speech-language pathology, Elaine Shuey, Ph.D., professor and chair of speech-language pathology, and Kathi Harold, a graduate student from Emmaus, Pa., presented research on the use of intensive vocal training for the remediation of vocal fold bowing and improved airway protection during swallowing.  In addition, Dr. Batson-Magnuson presented a seminar on the impact of rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus on speech, language, cognitive-linguistic functioning and swallowing.

Dr. Shuey and her 2014 speech science class presented their final class project on Formant Frequency in Relation to Body Mass Index in Women.  Five students from the class received support from the Noonan Fund to attend the conference and present their findings.

Susan Dillmuth-Miller, Au.D., assistant professor of speech-language pathology, Mark Wallace, a graduate student from Harrisburg, Pa. and Dawn Craig ’14, presented a technical session on Six Successful Strategies to Screen Hearing of Individuals with Autism.

Dr. Shuey, former president of PSHA, continues to serve on the organization’s Von Drach Scholarship committee.
