On December 16 a total of 419 students will graduate from East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania. Many will begin the next step in their life’s journey by attending graduate or professional school or starting a new career.

Each student has their own unique story to tell about the path that brought them to ESU, their journey while here, and where they might go in the future. Here are a few examples.

Sydney McCarthy will graduate with a Bachelor of Science in exercise science. She came to ESU from Reading, Pa. She is a member of Phi Eta Sigma National Honor Society and a member of the field hockey team. She made the Dean’s list each semester and currently has a 4.0 grade point average in her major. She is a two-time recipient of the NCAA Division II Elite 90 Award (2015, 2017) as the student-athlete with the highest cumulative GPA at the national championship site, and a two-time recipient of the PSAC Champion Scholar Award (2016, 2017) for the same qualifications at the conference championship site.

On the field, McCarthy earned National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) All-America first team honors as a senior, was named the Synapse Sports NCAA Division II Defensive Player of the Year and was selected to play in the NFHCA DII Senior Game. She was also honored as the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Defensive Athlete of the Year and was a two-time All-PSAC selection. She was a starter on ESU’s first-ever PSAC and NCAA DII championship teams as a sophomore in 2015, and helped the Warriors to three straight NCAA Tournament appearances from 2015 through 2017.

McCarthy plans to attend graduate school to further her education in physical therapy.

Annette Frailey, from East Stroudsburg, Pa., will graduate with a Bachelor of Science in business management with a concentration in accounting. Frailey’s path to a bachelor’s degree did not start straight out of high school. After working at a local hospital for nearly a decade she decided it was time for a career change. In 2001 she received an associates degree in architecture and worked at an architecture firm. She took time off to raise her twins, then went back to work at a credit union. While employed there, she attended Northampton Community College and completed coursework for an associates degree in business administration. In fall 2016 Frailey decided to go back to school once more. Working full time, she entered ESU as a full-time student taking both day and evening classes. After years of education and raising her children Frailey will have a bachelor’s degree.

Alisha Rohrer, from Carlisle, Pa., will graduate with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in integrated art and design. Rohrer is the art director for the student-run graphic design agency, New Mind Design. She has been offered three jobs in her field and has two more interviews to complete before deciding where she’ll begin her professional career.

Kayla Sutter from Cresco, Pa., will graduate with a Bachelor of Arts in English. She is the first in her family to graduate from college. Sutter served as managing editor of The Stroud Courier. She plans to move to Philadelphia to follow her media dreams.

Samantha Washington, from Scotrun, Pa., will graduate with a Bachelor of Science in digital media technologies. Washington is described as a strong leader and a good student. She completed two internships including one at Oxygen Network at NBC Universal in New York City. While there she created television commercials for the network that are currently airing.
