The National Student Speech Language Hearing Association (NSSLHA) at East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania will host NSSLHA Day on Tuesday, November 18.

This will be a day of recognition for East Stroudsburg University’s NSSLHA chapter. First, from 11a.m. – 2 p.m., the chapter will hold its third bake sale of the semester in the University Center. All proceeds from this sale will go to Operation Smile, an international volunteer organization that provides free surgeries to correct cleft lips and palates of children from low income countries. Second, at 2 p.m. in Stroud Hall Room 113, NSSLHA will host guest speaker Ellen Pagano, a speech-language pathology graduate student who will present her thesis research on spelling development in children grades one through seven.

“This is a very special occasion because Ellen will also present her thesis research in Orlando, Florida at the American Speech Language Hearing Association’s (ASHA) national conference later this month,” Jennifer Price, a senior majoring in speech- language pathology from Easton, Pa. , said.

NSSLHA has accomplished a number of tasks in just a few short months during the fall 2014 semester. In addition to volunteering at a local soup kitchen, holding bake sales, and having a Zumba fundraiser, NSSLHA has raised over $1,500 for Operation Smile through fundraising efforts by more than 150 members.

Both the bake sale and presentation are open to the public and free of charge.

“It is important for the public to recognize NSSLHA Day because it is a very active organization on campus and in the community,” Price said. “Community outreach through volunteer events is something our club thrives on.”
