As part of East Stroudsburg University’s Spring 2018 Provost’s Colloquium Series Robert McKenzie Ph.D., distinguished professor and chair of communication, and Kelly McKenzie, Ed.D., assistant professor and tutorial coordinator of academic enrichment and learning, will present “Summer Study Abroad at Lund University, Sweden” in Beers Lecture Hall on Wednesday February 28, 2018 at 5:30 p.m.

In the summer of 2017, Rob McKenzie and Kelly McKenzie led a group of 19 ESU students to study at Lund University, Sweden. The trip was partially funded by the Office of the Provost.

Dr. Rob McKenzie taught a course on comparative media, which featured guest lecturers including: a Swedish freelance newspaper journalist, a Spanish professor specializing in the use of media by the European Union, and the president of Media Evolution City, a company specializing in the use of corporate media. The course also included excursions to a Swedish newspaper, a Swedish entrepreneurial center, a restored Viking village, Copenhagen, and Hamlet’s Castle (Kronberg Castle) in Denmark. Dr. Kelly McKenzie mentored two undergraduate students who was undertaking an independent study and research. The research was related to the impact of memorable messages on perceptions of sexism in the U.S. and Sweden. Pia Kinhult, a strategic adviser for the European Spallation Source and former president of the regional council in Skåne also spoke to the class on the obstacles she has overcome in attaining management and leadership positions in her fields.

This presentation will describe the process of putting together a study-abroad course; the content of the course and the independent study, and the findings of the independent study.
