The first two hours of the four-hour documentary “Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide,” will be shown at East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania on Tuesday, October 2 at 7 p.m. in Abeloff Center for the Performing Arts. The screening, which is open to the general public at no cost, focuses on the ongoing campaign to end the oppression of women and girls worldwide. The event is sponsored by two ESU student organizations, Women for Awareness and the Muslim Student Association. All donations accepted at the screening will be forwarded to the Half the Sky Movement.

According to www.halftheskymovement.org, this television series for PBS and international broadcast was shot in 10 countries: Cambodia, Kenya, India, Sierra Leone, Somaliland, Vietnam, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Liberia and the United States. Reporter Nicholas Kristof and A-list celebrities who traveled with him — America Ferrera, Diane Lane, Eva Mendes, Meg Ryan, Gabrielle Union and Olivia Wilde — introduce women and girls who are living under some of the most difficult circumstances imaginable and fighting bravely to change them. Their intimate, dramatic and immediate stories of struggle reflect viable and sustainable options for empowerment and offer an actionable blueprint for transformation. The series premieres in the United States on October 1 and 2, 2012, on PBS with international broadcast to follow.

Inspired by journalists Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn’s book of the same name, “Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide” brings together video, websites, games, blogs and other educational tools to raise awareness of women’s issues, and provide concrete steps to fight these problems and empower women.
Women for Awareness is an organization formed by women students at ESU to heighten campus awareness about women’s issues and to support a gender-equitable climate. The purpose of the Muslim Student Association at ESU is to serve the best interest of Islam and the Muslims of East Stroudsburg University and the local community.
