Dr. Christopher Brooks Presents the “Life and Times of Gertrude Mary Smith Boddie 1886 -1941” at 5:30 PM Tues. April 16, in Stroud Hall, Room 410. In 1904, Gertrude was the first African-American woman to graduate from a Pennsylvania Normal school, specifically East Stroudsburg Normal School, today known as East Stroudsburg University.

Success Series – How to Build Your Professional Network Using Social Media From 2:00 – 3:00 PM Tues., April 16 in Stroud Hall 220. Did you know that up to 85% of companies use social media tools like Google and Linkedin to research candidates before or after interviews? Understand the science and theory of non-verbal communications and its influence on networking. Hear examples of networking success, while also dispelling common networking myths. Learn three simple changes you can make to your networking strategy. Find out how to create your personal brand statement and market it using social media to make the right connections in your industry to get you the job.

The Undeclared Advising Program will host Change of Major Day from 2:00 – 4:00 PM Thurs., April 18 on the Quad. Change of Major Day provides students the opportunity to interact with faculty members or student representatives from each major department about a particular discipline, and to hear about academic, career, and extracurricular opportunities offered through major and minor degree programs. Students can use this information during the summer to explore their academic major options. Free ice cream and giveaways will be offered throughout the event. Fiction/Non-Fiction Writer and Poet Julie Houston Will Read a Selection From her Novel, Traveling Light at 4:00 PM Thurs., April 18 in Monroe Hall, B01. Houston is a graduate of The Johns Hopkins Writing Seminars and has published stories and poems, as well as articles on travel, tennis, and archeology. Sponsored by the ESU English Deparment and Calliope literary journal.

Zip Line and Open Ropes Course, 3:00 to 6:00 PM Fri., April 19 at Stony Acres. The cost is $5 and transportation is available behind the Laurel parking lot at 2 p.m. You must preregister by April 17 on the top floor of the Union at the Ticket Sales Desk. ESU Invites the General Public to Attend a Sky Show, Titled “The Stars of Spring” and a Feature Show, “Passport to the Universe,” at 7:00 PM and 8:00 PM on Fri., April 19 in the McMunn Planetarium in the Warren E. ‘55 and Sandra Hoeffner Science and Technology Center. “Stars of Spring” describes what can be seen in the heavens during the spring months. The feature show, “Passport to the Universe,” narrated by two-time Academy Award winner Tom Hanks, treats the audience to realistic close-up views of star fields and planets, taking them on an exhilarating flight through a virtual re-creation of our universe. The program is open to the general public at no cost, but reservations are required due to limited seating. Reservations will be taken online starting at 8 a.m., April 15, on a first-come, first-serve basis at www.esu.edu/planetarium. Group inquiries should send an email request to stardomes@esu.edu. “Time to Get Your Mud on” Muddy Madness Event. Race Day Check in Begins at 12:30 PM Race Starts at 1:30 PM Sun., April 21 at Stony Acres. The preregistration begins immediately and will run through April 16 in the University Center, Room 211 at ticket sales desk. The preregistration price is $10 for ESU students, $15 for ESU faculty and staff, and $20 for the general public. All registration fees will increase by $5 after April 16. Registration is limited to 50 participants and will include a free T-shirt. Bring your own food and drink. The race will include a creek crawl, hill climb, tractor tire flip, log carry, memorization hill, fitness station and so much more! Project Enable Mentoring Fair, 2:00 – 3:00 PM April 15 and April 22 in Stroud Hall, Room 116. Project Enable is a program sponsored by the National Science Foundation, designed to introduce individuals with disabilities to computer science. If you are in a computer or technology field, please consider becoming an online mentor. It looks wonderful on a resume, and there is a stipend! Northeastern Pennsylvania (NEPA) Regional Bioscience Initiative: Research & Testing Roundtable From 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM Mon., April 22 at the Innovation Center at 562 Independence Road. The Office of Workforce Development is hosting the Northeastern RBI Research and Testing Roundtable, an initiative based upon the conclusions of an Angelou Economics Study that recognized Northeastern PA has the bioscience resources, regional educational institutions and private sector industries to grow and sustain bioscience industry jobs. The NEPA Regional Bioscience Initiative is an eight county effort that involves: Lackawanna, Luzerne, Monroe, Pike Schuylkill, Susquehanna, Wayne and Wyoming collaborating to advance NEPA’s Bioscience industry. The roundtables are focused on research and testing and include students, faculty, entrepreneurs, researchers, industry and economic development professionals. A Discussion Celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the Rolling Stones, 7:00 – 9:00 PM Sat., May 4 in Stroud Hall, Room 117. Rob McKenzie, Distinguished Professor of Communication Studies and host of the “Stones Hour” on WESS Radio (90.3 FM), Tuesdays from 6 – 7 p.m., will lead a discussion about the Stones, showing concert footage and playing songs and unique song versions from the past 50 years. There will be a special focus on Keith Richards. Audience participation will be invited. More information can be obtained by emailing mckenzie@esu.edu.

Join Other ESU Baseball Fans on Sat., April 20 for ESU Night at the IronPigs! Hope to see you at Coca-Cola Park in Allentown at 6:35 p.m. for a great night of baseball as the Lehigh Valley IronPigs take on the Buffalo Bisons! The ESU Staff and Alumni Association will be on site greeting guests and giving away copies of their Autumn Days publication. There will be photo opportunities with Burgy as well as the IronPigs mascots. Also, a John Mayberry commemorative pint glass will be given to the first 3,000+ adults through the gate. The Dept. of Academic Enrichment and Learning; STAR Program is Accepting Applications for Student Peer Mentors for Summer 2013 and the 2013-2014 Academic Year. Peer mentoring is a service for STAR students at East Stroudsburg University. The program is supported by faculty and staff. Peer mentors provide help with college adjustment and dealing with personal, academic, and career concerns, and decision making. All of this is offered in a confidential, non-judgmental environment. Time Commitment: 10 hours per week for the academic year. Academic Requirements: Minimum GPA of 2.8 and up. Minimum 30 earned credit hours. Application deadline: April 12. All application materials can be picked up and returned to The Learning Center, Rosenkrans East, Room 21.

The show is free to both students and the public and is presented by the Special Event and Program Planning class of the Recreation and Leisure Services Management major in collaboration with the Student Activity Association.

Mon., April 15, 6:00 – 9:00 PM Leadership programming will be having a movie night from 6 – 9 p.m. in Linden Hall. The movie will be Gran Torino. There will be pizza, beverages and popcorn.
