Comic Thon 12-Hour Comic Event, Noon to Midnight, Saturday, Oct. 13, in the Fine and Performing Arts Building (Studio Rooms 103 and 102). Local artists, art enthusiasts and/or comic book lovers who want to test their creativity and push their artistic limits are invited. David Mazure, comic book artist and assistant professor of art, will provide instruction and assistance for novices and amateurs. The $5 registration fee, which includes all supplies necessary to create a comic book, is a donation to the Student Art Association (SAA). Participants are also welcome to bring their own supplies. Space limited to

ESU’s Graduate and Professional Student Association (GPSA) Meeting, 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 16, in Zimbar- Liljenstein Hall Second Floor Conference Room. The Graduate & Professional Student Association (GPSA) seeks to enhance the advanced learning, research, scholarship, leadership and professional service experiences of graduate and professional students at ESU. GPSA will serve as a forum for graduate students to share opportunities and concerns
they experience as students at ESU. GPSA will also empower members to suggest opportunities for student activities and recommend solutions to current issues to enhance the graduate student experience at ESU. Free HIV/STD Information Sessions on Campus, 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 16 in Linden Hall. ESU’s Community Health Organization (CHO) has partnered with Co-County Wellness Services to provide these sessions.

Physician Assistant Panel Discussion, 6:00 – 8:00 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 18, in Sci. & Tech. 117. Attend a question and answer discussion forum about the healthcare profession of a Physician Assistant (PA). A panel of graduate students currently pursuing Master of Science in PA Studies degrees at Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine will discuss and answer questions about admission to PA graduate programs, life in graduate school, and the role of a PA. 11th Annual National Touring Film Festival (LUNAFEST®), 4:00 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 18, in Beers Lecture Hall. LUNAFEST® is the fundraising film festival dedicated to promoting awareness about women’s issues, highlighting women filmmakers, and bringing women together in their communities. Hosted by the East Stroudsburg University President’s Commission for Women and ESU’s Women’s Center. All proceeds from LUNAFEST will benefit the Breast Cancer Fund and The Lucy Fund for Metastatic Breast Cancer Research in memory of Dr. Lucy Stanovick, an ESU English professor who lost her life to metastatic breast cancer in August 2012. The Fall 2012 Wimer Lecture in International Affairs, 7:00 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 18, in the Abeloff Center for the Performing Arts Center. Dr. Francisco Javier Moreno Fuentes will speak on “Immigration and the Economic Crisis in Spain: Implications for the European Union and the United States.” Dr. Moreno Fuentes, is with the Institute of Public Goods and Policy at the Spanish National Research Council. He is currently a visiting Fellow at European Union Center at New York University and has been a research fellow at the Institute for the Study of Politics, Sciences-Po, Paris, the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, and the European Institute and the British Library of Political and Economic Science at the London School of Economics. He is the author of four books and numerous articles on immigration, health, welfare, and citizenship policy, with a focus on Spain. He has a Ph.D. in Political Science from the Universidad Autónoma of Madrid. Open to the public at no cost. University Leadership/University Service Award: Applications are now available for those who are graduating in December, 2012. These awards are the highest non-academic honors a graduating senior can receive for work as a leader in extra-curricular activities on campus or in participation in activities and services on and off-campus. Applications are available from the Student Activity Association office on the second floor of the University Center and must be returned by Friday, October 19. For those graduating in May 2013, there will be another application process with a March 15, 2013 deadline.

Second-Annual Jazz Party at Zoot Fest, Noon – 6:00 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 21, in the Keystone Room. The jazz party will again honor saxophone partner Zoot Sims and Al Cohn, and serves as a major fundraising event for ESU’s Al Cohn Memorial Jazz Collection and community outreach partner, COTA CampJazz. Presenting Dominicanos Unidos: The Island – Diaspora Continuum in Dominican Literature and Culture, 6:00 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 25, in Student Senate Chamber – University Center. A Hispanic Heritage Event. This talk will focus on the history of Dominican migration through literature and culture from the nineteenth century to the present. Diwali – Festival of Lights 2012, 5:30 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 3, in the Keystone Room. The word “Diwali” is the modern version of the Sanskrit word “Deepavali” which means rows of light and so the celebrations are often referred to as the “Festival of Lights.” The festival symbolizes the triumph of good over evil and focuses on appreciating the goodness in everyone – friend or foe. Diwali festivals are celebrated by a billion people in South Asia and elsewhere in the diaspora annually. Who’s Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities – Applications are Now Available. After 79 years of serving higher education, Who’s Who remains one of the most highly regarded and long-standing honors programs in the nation. Those selected for Who’s Who are juniors, seniors or graduate students, active participants in collegiate extra-curricular activities and the community and maintain a minimum of a 3.0 GPA. If you would like to be considered for East Stroudsburg University’s 2013 Who’s Who, you can pick up an application from the Student Activity Association office on the second floor of the University Center. Deadline for returning completed applications is Friday, Oct. 12.

2012 PEBTF Open Enrollment for AFSCME and SCUPA October 1 – October 19

Each fall, Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education employees who are covered by the Pennsylvania Employees Benefit Trust Fund (PEBTF) health benefits have an opportunity to review their coverage and make changes for the coming year. This year’s open enrollment period is October 1 – October 19. All changes must be completed in Employee Self Service (ESS) or returned to your university human resources office no later than October 19. All changes made will become effective January 1, 2013. The PASSHE Employee Self Service (ESS) portal can be accessed through https://portal.passhe.edu/irj/portal.

A Fall Concert – The Band “Fun” on Thursday, Nov. 1, in the Mattioli Recreation Center. Tickets are on sale now for ESU students. Tickets cost $15 and are available at the Student Activities Complex from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday and in the ESU Convenience Store from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m., Monday – Thursday, until 5:00 p.m. on Friday and from noon – 8:00 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
