11th Annual National Touring Film Festival (LUNAFEST®), 4:00 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 18, in Beers Lecture Hall. LUNAFEST® is the fundraising film festival dedicated to promoting awareness about women’s issues, highlighting women filmmakers, and bringing women together in their communities. Hosted by the East Stroudsburg University President’s Commission for Women and ESU’s Women’s Center. All proceeds from LUNAFEST will benefit the Breast Cancer Fund and The Lucy Fund for Metastatic Breast Cancer Research in memory of Dr. Lucy Stanovick, an ESU English professor who lost her life to metastatic breast cancer in August 2012. Fall 2012 Wimer Lecture in International Affairs, 7:00 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 18, in the Abeloff Center for the Performing Arts Center. Dr. Francisco Javier Moreno Fuentes will speak on “Immigration and the Economic Crisis in Spain: Implications for the European Union and the United States.” Dr. Moreno Fuentes is with the Institute of Public Goods and Policy at the Spanish National Research Council. He is currently a visiting Fellow at European Union Center at New York University and has been a research fellow at the Institute for the Study of Politics, Sciences-Po, Paris, the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, and the European Institute and the British Library of Political and Economic Science at the London School of Economics. He is the author of four books and numerous articles on immigration, health, welfare, and citizenship policy, with a focus on Spain. He has a Ph.D. in political science from the Universidad Autónoma of Madrid. Open to the public at no cost. A Strike Out Arthritis Fundraising Event – A “Twister” Tournament Competition, 1:00 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 27, in the Keystone Room. The funds will go toward various juvenile arthritis programs nationwide. Registration for this event is open to the general public, and there is a $3 cost per person to participate. Individual participants will be placed into teams of no more than five to compete on each mat. Refreshments and entertainment will be provided. Presenting Dominicanos Unidos: The Island – Diaspora Continuum in Dominican Literature and Culture, 6:00 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 25, in Student Senate Chamber – University Center. A Hispanic heritage event. This talk will focus on the history of Dominican migration through literature and culture from the nineteenth century to the present. A Princeton Postdoctoral Fellow and Yale assistant professor, Dr. Dixa Ramirez, will discuss writers and artists such as Salomé Ureña, Junot Díaz, and Rita Indiana Hernández. “Trick or Treat through the Halls” 6:00 – 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 31, at the Quad. The event, sponsored by ESU’s Residence Hall Association (RHA), is open to all elementary aged children in the community at no cost. Participating children are asked to wear their costumes and bring a trick- or-treat bag. Parents are required to accompany children to campus and must remain present throughout the course of the event. Parents may choose to escort their child(ren) through the residence halls or sit in a common area while the event takes place. Groups will be escorted from hall to hall by student volunteers from the education department and various campus organizations. Participating students will hand out treats from their dormitory rooms. Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education – Second Annual Student Business Plan Competition. Do you have an idea for a new business? Diwali – Festival of Lights 2012, 5:30 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 3, in the Keystone Room. The word “Diwali” is the modern version of the Sanskrit word “Deepavali” which means rows of light and so the celebrations are often referred to as the “Festival of Lights.” The festival symbolizes the triumph of good over evil and focuses on appreciating the goodness in everyone – friend or foe. Diwali festivals are celebrated by
a billion people in South Asia and elsewhere in the diaspora annually. University Leadership/University Service Award: Applications are now available for those who are graduating in December, 2012. These awards are the highest non-academic honors a graduating senior can receive for work as a leader in extra-curricular activities on campus or in participation in activities and services on and off-campus. Applications are available from the Student Activity Association office on the second floor of the University Center and must be returned by Friday, October 19. For those graduating in May 2013, there will be another application process with a March 15, 2013 deadline.

2012 PEBTF Open Enrollment for AFSCME and SCUPA October 1 – October 19

Each fall, Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education employees who are covered by the Pennsylvania Employees Benefit Trust Fund (PEBTF) health benefits have an opportunity to review their coverage and make changes for the coming year. This year’s open enrollment period is October 1 – October 19. All changes must be completed in Employee Self Service (ESS) or returned to your university human resources office no later than October 19. All changes made will become effective January 1, 2013.

A Fall Concert – The Band “Fun” on Thursday, Nov. 1, in the Mattioli Recreation Center. Tickets are on sale now for ESU students. Tickets cost $15 and are available at the Student Activities Complex from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday and in the ESU Convenience Store from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m., Monday – Thursday, until 5:00 p.m. on Friday and from noon – 8:00 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. A play by Francis Goodrich and Albert Hackett based upon Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl Newly adapted by Wendy Kesselman Directed by Margaret Joyce Ball Scenic and costume design by Yoshinori Tanokura Lighting design by Benjamin Weill Seventy years ago, in July, 1942, 13-year-old Anne Frank, together with her parents and her older sister Margot, went into hiding from the Nazis who were in the process of exterminating Jews throughout Europe. Four other people joined the Franks in a cramped set of rooms hidden above a warehouse in Amsterdam. Anne, in her diary, chronicled the turbulence of adolescence; the drama created by the claustrophobic conditions; and, most importantly, the impact of the Holocaust on those caught by it. Auditions for the Spring Production of The Goat or Who is Silvia? 6:00 – 9:00 p.m., Monday, Oct. 22 and Wednesday, Oct. 24, in the Smith-McFarland Theatre. Auditions are open to all students in all majors. Auditions will consist of readings from the scripts. Scripts are available for a one-day sign out in Room 218 of the Fine Arts Center.
