Presenting Dominicanos Unidos: The Island – Diaspora Continuum in Dominican Literature and Culture, 6:00 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 25, in Student Senate Chamber – University Center. A Hispanic heritage event. This talk will focus on the history of Dominican migration through literature and culture from the nineteenth century to the present. A Princeton Postdoctoral Fellow and Yale assistant professor, Dr. Dixa Ramirez, will discuss writers and artists such as Salomé Ureña, Junot Díaz, and Rita Indiana Hernández. A Strike Out Arthritis Fundraising Event – A “Twister” Tournament Competition, 1:00 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 27, in the Keystone Room. The funds will go toward various juvenile arthritis programs nationwide. Registration for this event is open to the general public, and there is a $3 cost per person to participate. Individual participants will be placed into teams of no more than five to compete on each mat. Refreshments and entertainment will be provided. ESU’s Political Science Department and Chapter of The American Democracy Project will Sponsor a Mock Presidential Debate at 7:00 p.m., Monday, Oct. 29 in the Abeloff Center for the Performing Arts. “Trick or Treat through the Halls” 6:00 – 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 31, at the Quad. The event, sponsored by ESU’s Residence Hall Association (RHA), is open to all elementary aged children in the community at no cost. Participating children are asked to wear their costumes and bring a trick- or-treat bag. Parents are required to accompany children to campus and must remain present throughout the course of the event. Parents may choose to escort their child(ren) through the residence halls or sit in a common area while the event takes place. Groups will be escorted from hall to hall by student volunteers from the education department and various campus organizations. Participating students will hand out treats from their dormitory rooms. Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education – Second Annual Student Business Plan Competition. Do you have an idea for a new business? Diwali – Festival of Lights 2012, 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 3, in the Keystone Room. The word “Diwali” is the modern version of the Sanskrit word “Deepavali” which means rows of light and so the celebrations are often referred to as the “Festival of Lights.” The festival symbolizes the triumph of good over evil and focuses on appreciating the goodness in everyone – friend or foe. Diwali festivals are celebrated by a billion people in South Asia and elsewhere in the diaspora annually. University Leadership/University Service Award: Applications are now available for those who are graduating in December, 2012. These awards are the highest non-academic honors a graduating senior can receive for work as a leader in extra-curricular activities on campus or in participation in activities and services on and off-campus. Applications are available from the Student Activity Association office on the second floor of the University Center and must be returned by Friday, October 19. For those graduating in May 2013, there will be another application process with a March 15, 2013 deadline.
