The Limited Area Mesoscale Prediction System (LAMPS) is a set of programs that take an initial state of the atmosphere (derived from observations or analytic conditions), simulate the evolution of the atmosphere from the initial state and graph and analyze the results. Each program performs one step of the process.

A tutorial is available that guides the user through the steps needed to install, compile and run a sample of LAMPS programs. The tutorial is included as part of the LAMPS package as the doc/tutorial.pdf file.

This tutorial is self-sufficient and allows users to experience the LAMPS environment without having to read through all the documentation. Very little information is given on how LAMPS is structured, however. Such information is critical for the successful use of LAMPS. That is, one needs to know how to set up a new forecast, where to specify to the programs what you want them to do, where the files are stored, where and how to compile and run a program, and how to check that the program ran normally. If you find this information lacking in the tutorial, read the User's Guide (in PostScript) to learn more about these kinds of details.
