Typically, the day starts at 9 AM with registration and orientation. Scouts are assigned to groups, with six scouts to a group. Each group is led by an ESU student chaperone, who helps the group navigate through the activities during the day.
At 9:30 AM, scouts completed a series of five "stations", with each station lasting 30 minutes. At each station, ESU student volunteers and faculty lead scouts through activities designed to help them meet many of the requirements of the Webelos Scientist Activity Badge.
At noon, the scouts head over to the all-you-can-eat buffet cafeteria on ESU's campus (included in the event fee). After lunch, scouts launch bottle rockets, during which they address another requirement for the activity badge.
At 2 PM, scouts return to the science building to work on their experiments. After presenting their results, they get the opportunity to interview scientists. The day ends at 4 PM, after a wrap-up and celebration, usually a planetarium show or a science show by an ESU student group.
During the course of the day, scouts have the opportunity to complete enough activities sufficient to obtain the Webelos Scientist Activity Badge. To keep track of their requirements, each scout is given an ID card that lists the various requirements. The card hangs on a lanyard around their neck and, as they complete each requirement, their card is hole-punched. That way, scout leaders know whether the scout has completed the requirements or not.
The cost of the event covers the cost of materials and lunch for each scout and many of the volunteers. This is also the main fundraising event for the ESU NSTA student chapter and supports student registration and travel to NSTA conferences. This is an all-volunteer event and typically involves over thirty ESU students.
