East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania (ESU) will honor 274 students during the 36th Annual Honors Convocation on Friday, April 21, at 4 p.m. in the Abeloff Center for the Performing Arts. The Honors Convocation is sponsored by the Association of Pennsylvania State College and University Faculties (APSCUF) with support from the ESU Office of Academic Affairs.<\/p>\n
The keynote address will be presented by Patricia S. Smeaton, Ed.D., professor emerita and past chair and graduate coordinator of the professional and secondary education department at ESU.<\/p>\n
In her 23 years at ESU Dr. Smeaton taught doctoral, graduate, and undergraduate courses, supervised student teachers, coordinated the doctoral program, and served as chair of numerous dissertation committees. She was the co-founder and director of the Secondary Professional Development Program, co-director of the ESU Center for Teaching and Learning, and co-developer of the Middle Level Teacher Certification Program. She began her career as a mathematics teacher in 1971. During 15 years in the secondary schools she coached field hockey and track, and her passion for improving education led her to teacher advocacy work through leadership positions in teacher unions. Her research has focused on beginning teachers, teacher retention, teacher effectiveness and student success. She has been a frequent presenter at conferences and an author of articles on these topics.<\/p>\n
The 274 students being honored at the convocation have had great academic achievements at the university. Honor students must have of a minimum quality point average of 3.50 reflecting at least 36 semester hours of work completed at ESU, completion of at least 96 semester hours by January 1 of the year in which the award is considered and a minimum of two semesters as a full-time student.<\/p>\n
