{"id":16403,"date":"2017-10-18T08:04:34","date_gmt":"2017-10-18T12:04:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/quantumnew.esu.edu\/insider\/?p=16403"},"modified":"2017-10-18T08:05:04","modified_gmt":"2017-10-18T12:05:04","slug":"provosts-colloquium-series-presents-talk-on-genome-editing-with-biology-and-philosophy-professors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/quantum.esu.edu\/backup_insider\/provosts-colloquium-series-presents-talk-on-genome-editing-with-biology-and-philosophy-professors\/","title":{"rendered":"Provost\u2019s Colloquium Series Presents Talk on Genome Editing with Biology and Philosophy Professors"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As part of East Stroudsburg University\u2019s Fall 2017 Provost\u2019s Colloquium Series, Tim Connolly, Ph.D., professor and chair of philosophy and religious studies and Maria Kitchens-Kintz, Ph.D., assistant professor of biology, will present \u201cThe Future of Genome Editing: Where Biology, Technology and Ethics Meet.\u201d The talk will be held in Beers Lecture Hall on October 25, 2017 from 5:30-7:00 pm.<\/p>\n<p>The discussion will be about the new genome editing system CRISPR (an acronym for a type of bacterial system that efficiently and easily edits the genome of any organism) and the biological and ethical consequences of using such powerful technology. Dr. Kitchens-Kintz will give a history on how humans have genetically modified organisms through selective breeding and molecular techniques. She will also explain how CRISPR edits the genome and what potential exists with CRISPR.
