{"id":19448,"date":"2019-10-25T15:23:05","date_gmt":"2019-10-25T19:23:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/quantum.esu.edu\/insider\/?p=19448"},"modified":"2019-10-25T15:23:05","modified_gmt":"2019-10-25T19:23:05","slug":"esu-celebrates-50th-anniversary-of-physics-department","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/quantum.esu.edu\/backup_insider\/esu-celebrates-50th-anniversary-of-physics-department\/","title":{"rendered":"ESU Celebrates 50th Anniversary of Physics Department"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Photo left to right: ESU alumnus, James McFadden, professor emeritus Dr. Paul Houle, Dr. David Buckley, professor of physics.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>East Stroudsburg University celebrated the 50<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary of the physics department on Friday, October 18. <\/p>\n<p>Biology, chemistry, and physics were one department at ESU prior to physics becoming its own department in 1969.<\/p>\n<p>The celebration took place during ESU Homecoming Weekend, in the Warren E. \u201955 and Sandra Hoeffner Science and Technology Center.<\/p>\n<p>The celebration included a pizza party, a planetarium show, and a tour of the observatory. <\/p>\n<p>Current physics students joined faculty, staff, and alumni in the celebration.<\/p>\n<p>While the physics labs and classrooms remain in their original home in Gessner Science Hall, faculty offices moved to the Science and Technology Center in 2014. <\/p>\n<p>Gessner Science Hall, which opened in 1960, is named after George Gessner, a physics professor who began teaching at ESU in 1947.<\/p>\n<p>The observatory, which was originally located along Mary St., moved to the roof of the Science and Technology Center in 2008.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>ESU celebrated the 50<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary of the physics department on Friday, October 18.
