ESU’s Madelon Powers Gallery to Present “New Mythologists: The Three Horsemen of the Apocalypse (and another)”

The Madelon Powers Gallery at East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania will present its latest exhibit, New Mythologists: The Three Horsemen of the Apocalypse (and another), from October 6 to November 7. This installation by ESU Assistant Professor of Art + Design David Mazure and The MMXII Collective reinterprets a biblical image of the world’s end. A gallery talk, performance and reception for the artists will be held on October 22.

The installation asks the questions: “what happens to this end-of-the-world myth when it fails to deliver what it has promised?” and “can we reimagine and repurpose it to suit the needs of the new millennium?” In the exhibition’s world of new myth, what once was controlled by religion is now usurped by The Corporation who influences both visible and invisible realities. The end game is no longer salvation, but consumption and personal profit.

Mazure and The MMXII Collective —  a private group of artists who are focused on transcending materialism —  will present their talk and performance on Wednesday, October 22 at 5 p.m. followed by a reception in the gallery. The events on October 22 and the exhibit are open to the public at no cost.

Hours for the gallery, located in the university’s Fine & Performing Arts Center, Normal and Marguerite streets, East Stroudsburg, are 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., Wednesday and Thursday, and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday, Thursday, and Friday. The gallery is closed Monday, October 13.

A member of the ESU faculty since 2010, Mazure earned his B.F.A. in visual arts: graphic design from the Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University and his M.F.A. in printmaking from East Tennessee State University.

The installation’s development was made possible by a 2012 ESU Faculty Development and Research major grant.
