ESU Honors 288 Students During 34th Annual Honors Convocation on April 10

East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania (ESU) honored 288 students during the 34th Annual Honors Convocation held Friday, April 10, in the Abeloff Center for the Performing Arts. The Honors Convocation is sponsored by the Association of Pennsylvania State College and University Faculties (APSCUF) with a grant from the ESU Office of Academic Affairs.

The keynote address was presented by Mary Anne Moore, Ph.D., professor emerita of physics. Dr. Moore joined ESU in 1999. She was the university’s only female physicist. She was granted professor emerita in May of 2014. After her retirement, she wrote her first spy novel, inspired by a trip she took to South Africa. Dr. Moore spends her time volunteering at the Kettle Creek Environmental Education Center. “I was surprised and honored to be named volunteer of the year,” she said. “It is so rewarding to volunteer and retirement gave me the extra time to give to them.”

The Honors Convocation also welcomed student speaker Hunter Fogel, a senior majoring in English from East Stroudsburg, Pa. Fogel’ s passions lie with words and theatre. In his time at the university, he was a dramaturg, a position within theatre that deals mainly with research and the development of plays, for both Wizard of Oz and A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Last year, Fogel traveled to  Peru, where he spent four weeks teaching English in Cuzco.

“I really like finding a way to interact with cultures, learn their language and give back to their community,” he said. Fogel is set to graduate in May of 2015 magna cum laude, boasting a 3.79 GPA.

Like Fogel, the 288 students honored at the convocation have had great achievements at the university. Honor students must have of a minimum quality point average of 3.50 reflecting at least 36 semester hours of work completed at ESU, completion of at least 96 semester hours by January 1 of the year in which the award is considered and a minimum of two semesters as a full-time student.

There were five APSCUF Scholarship recipients: Emily Conte, a freshman majoring in psychology from Fair Lawn, N.J.; Alexandra Vazquez, a sophomore majoring in communication studies from East Stroudsburg, Pa.; Blake Nugen, a junior majoring in chemical biotechnology from Dingmans Ferry, Pa.; Theresa Gehring, a sophomore majoring in psychology from Stroudsburg, Pa.; and Ashley Gungor, a freshman majoring in early childhood and elementary education from Glen Head, N.Y.
