ESU Professor to Host Opera Talk

Opera enthusiast Eugene Galperin, Ph.D., assistant professor of mathematics at East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania, will explore the 400-year history of expressing human drama and human emotions in his talk “Human Emotions on the Opera Stage: from the Baroque to Verismo,” on Tuesday, April 21, at 7 p.m. in the Science and Technology Center Auditorium. The presentation will include examples from operas by Mondeverdi, Purcell, Mozart, Donizetti, Verdi, Mascagni, and Leoncavallo.

Galperin’s talk is intended as an introduction to the upcoming Metropolitan Opera HD broadcast at the Cinemark Theater at the Stroud Mall. P. Mascagni’s opera Cavalleria Rusticana and R. Leoncavallo’s opera Pagliacci (both new productions) will be shown at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, April 25, and 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 29, 2015.

“These broadcasts have been going on for years and most students haven’t been aware,” Galperin said. “Last year, I gave ten talks under the general title ‘Why Opera Still is Relevant Today.’ As a result, quite a few students and community members attended the broadcast for the first time. That was encouraging, and I would like to keep it going.”
