Pocono Medical Center (PMC) and East Stroudsburg University (ESU) are proud to host the 15th annual Pink Light Walk, which will be held on Thursday, October 8 at 6 p.m. In collaboration with Pocono Medical Center’s Dale and Frances Hughes Cancer Center, Prime Time Health of Monroe County’s Area Agency on Aging, East Stroudsburg University, and the American Cancer Society, the walk is held to increase awareness for breast cancer during the month of October.
This year’s Pink Light Walk is organized by the Dale and Frances Hughes Cancer Center’s Breast Health Nurse Navigator Lutchana Beckford and a committee from the community. “The Pink Light Walk is a celebratory event hosted by Pocono Medical Center and ESU to celebrate the journey of people who have been touched by breast cancer in our community,” said Beckford.
The honorary spokesperson for this year’s Pink Light Walk, Annie Scully, is a proud survivor and front end specialist who registers patients at PMC’s Bartonsville Breast Health Center. Scully’s personal experience with breast cancer is inspiring to the patients she interacts with. “Five times a week I am hugging my patients, giving them hope that the battle can be won,” said Scully.
The Scully family has a history of breast cancer. Annie received yearly mammogram screenings and always performed self-examinations. In March 2014, Scully faced her biggest fear. She was diagnosed with breast cancer. “It was a rollercoaster ride. You can’t let fear consume you,” she said.
The Pink Light Walk will start at the Warren E. ’55 and Sandra Hoeffner Science and Technology Center located on Normal Street of ESU’s campus and will end at the Dale and Frances Hughes Cancer Center located on 181 East Brown Street, East Stroudsburg, Pa. The walk will occur rain or shine.
At 5 p.m., just prior to the walk, an education seminar will be held in the ESU Science and Technology Center. The walk will begin at 6 p.m. then Scully will speak about the importance of early detection for breast cancer at the Dale and Frances Hughes Cancer Center “It is a time to honor our survivors and bring awareness to breast cancer as Pocono Medical Center strives to build a healthier community by providing education on breast cancer – as early detection saves lives,” said Beckford. Pocono Medical Center offers a free mammogram voucher program service.
