Every year, 600 communities nationwide participate in the Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s. It is the world’s largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s care. This year, East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania hosted Monroe County’s walk.
Senior nursing students volunteered to help with this event, set up information booths and collected survey information to be used for Alzheimer’s Association research initiatives.
“The Alzheimer’s Walk gave students real life insight into the consequences of Alzheimer’s disease on the person and family and helped them in their quest to gain understanding and empathy in addition to their theoretical knowledge of this disorder,” Suzanne Prestoy, Ph.D., associate professor of nursing, said.
All those who participated received different flowers that they held while walking.
“It was amazing to see how many people this disease affects even within our own community,” Carly Heller, a senior majoring in nursing from Livingston, N.J., said. “I’m grateful to have participated in such an inspiring event and to continue to support the association.”
