In what has become an annual tradition, this year’s Zoot Fest will celebrate exceptional music presented by a line-up of distinguished musicians and the history of Al Cohn and Zoot Sims as told by those who played with him. On Sunday, November 8 from 12p.m. to 6p.m. at the Innovation Center, located at 562 Independence Road, East Stroudsburg, Pa. Bill Crow, Bill Dobbins, Bill Goodwin, Jerry Dodgion, Don Friedman, Lew Tabackin, and Sherrie Maricle’s Five Play featuring special guest Ken Peplowski will be honoring the legacy and music of Al and Zoot to benefit the Al Cohn Memorial Jazz Collection at East Stroudsburg University.
The day will include a musical kickoff followed by Commentary and a panel discussion, a jazz jam session, a musical remembrance of Al and Zoot, Five Play, and lunch with refreshments. Tickets for the day are $60 per person or $20 per student. Tickets can be purchased at the door or in advance at esu.edu/jazzatesu.
Dedicated to preserving all forms of jazz from all eras, The Al Cohn Memorial Jazz Collection (ACMJC) was founded in 1988 to honor the life and legacy of Al Cohn – legendary saxophonist, arranger, composer and conductor, and long-time Pocono resident. This collection includes the Zoot Sims Collection donated by his wife Louise. The collection is housed in Kemp library on the university’s campus. It consists of jazz recordings, oral histories, sheet music and arrangements, photographs, books, videos, and original art and memorabilia, all generously donated over the years by supporters from around the world. Its official jazz magazine, The Note, is published twice a year and distributed to a world-wide readership. For more information about the ACMJC, visit www.esu.edu/alcohncollection.
