ESU Greeks Wrap Up Project Turkey

Project Turkey, a service initiative launched in 2015 with ESU’s Greek organizations and Linda Van Meter, Ph.D., director of counseling and psychological services, completed its third year at East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania.

This year Project Turkey raised $9,131 to provide Thanksgiving turkeys to families in need in Monroe County. On the heels of two years of successful fundraising campaigns, sororities and fraternities once again selected Project Turkey as their philanthropic initiative. This partnership with the Salvation Army East Stroudsburg Corps is a united effort for ESU Greek organizations to have a positive impact on the community and to raise awareness about issues of hunger for local families.

“We’re happy to help bring a wonderful holiday experience to those less fortunate,” said Alexandra Kalinowski, a senior from Nazareth, Pa., who’s majoring in early childhood education and is the Panhellenic Council president. “It’s extremely rewarding to realize what a difference a group of women can make in such a short amount of time.”

Fundraising activities included collecting donations at ESU home football games, bagging groceries at the ShopRite in Stroudsburg, a fundraising event at Texas Roadhouse and seeking donations from the ESU community. Dr. William Riker, the Superintendent of East Stroudsburg Area School District, also conducted a district wide casual ‘dress down’ day raising $2,838.09 for the Project Turkey initiative.

“Project Turkey not only raises awareness about issues concerning hunger and food insecurity in our local and surrounding communities, it is an opportunity for ESU students to make a difference in the community” said Dr. Van Meter.

What a great project. There were a lot of families in Monroe County able to enjoy a turkey dinner for Thanksgiving that would not had that meaningful meal if you had not made the your efforts. Thinking of less fortunate folks is so important and ultimately rewarding.
