Department of Political Science and Economics to Host Presentation on Hiroshima

The political science and economics department at East Stroudsburg University will welcome Steven Leeper to campus on Friday, February 1 for a presentation entitled “Tragedy of Hiroshima and Seeking a Nuclear-Free Future.” The presentation will take place in Beers Lecture Hall at 2:30 p.m. and is open to the public at no cost.

Leeper, a longtime leader in the nuclear disarmament movement, served as the chairman of the Hiroshima Peace Culture Foundation from 2007-2013. The Hiroshima Peace Culture Foundation operates the globally-known Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum. Leeper will discuss his experiences and the current status of the movement.

Leeper will be accompanied by Emiko Okada, one of the few remaining survivors of the atomic explosion at Hiroshima in 1945, who will share her story with the audience as well. The survivors in the nuclear bombing of 1945 are known as “hibakusha” in Japanese language. It is becoming more difficult to hear directly about their experiences, and the dialogue with Okada will offer a rare opportunity.
