Students majoring in accounting at East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania are partnering with the United Way of Monroe County to provide free tax preparation assistance through a program sponsored by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). This Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program will be offered at the following three locations beginning Monday, February 4 through April 15, 2019. Income-eligible taxpayers, those who do not earn more than $54,000 per year and who do not have rental or self-employment income, are able to obtain free tax assistance, including free preparation and filing of their personal tax returns.
Locations for VITA Tax Service Assistance:
- The new Pocono Alliance office in Stroudsburg (301 McConnell Street)
- The United Way of Monroe County office in Tannersville (135 Warner Road)
- The Mountain Center in Tobyhanna (5800 Memorial Boulevard)
Appointments are required and may be made by calling Lucas DeBartolo, administrative and project officer and IRS VITA program coordinator, at 570-629-5657 ext. 117. No walk-ins will be accepted.
According to Dr. Sylvester Williams, dean of ESU’s College of Business and Management, this partnership has a very important place in our community. “The United Way of Monroe County has a strong history of making an impact for positive change as they address the issues of hunger and homelessness among our neighbors. Their organization has been a catalyst for mobilizing community resources to care for those in need. East Stroudsburg University brings 125 years of service-oriented leadership through education and by supporting community initiatives. This partnership leverages the United Way’s ability for mobilizing volunteers and ESU’s accounting students, who bring their top-tier accounting and tax accounting education to benefit low-income taxpayers. This service offers ESU students majoring in accounting an opportunity to apply their knowledge, interact with clients and learn how to use IRS-provided software. This is an excellent way for these students to gain additional real-world business experience.”
