The National Student Speech Language Hearing Association (NSSLHA) has awarded the NSSLHA Chapter at East Stroudsburg University with 2019 Gold Chapter Honors, recognizing ESU’s chapter for the second straight year.
The gold award is given to chapters that complete service learning projects, advocate for legislation for the disabled, have social events, and raise funds for charities. This year ESU’s NSSLHA chapter’s main charity was the Shriner’s Club of Boston, which performs cleft palate surgeries for children at no cost to families.
The student organization was also named ESU Club of the Year by ESU’s Student Activity Association.
Professor Ann Millett, club advisor, credits the achievement for this success to the students of NSSLHA. “The executive board and the members of our chapter are hardworking and dedicated to improving the lives of those affected by speech and language disorders.”
The following communication sciences and disorders majors served on the NSSLHA executive board during the 2018-19 academic year: president, Nia Lombardo, a senior from Avoca, Pa.; vice president, Kayla Altland, a senior from Robesonia, Pa.; treasurer, Cassandra Taylor, a senior from Levittown, Pa.; secretary, Syndee Curran, a senior from Wilkes Barre, Pa.; and community service representative, Rachel Neff, a sophomore from Perkiomenville, Pa.
National NSSLHA Chapter Honors are awarded to affiliated NSSLHA chapters that demonstrate an outstanding effort to support National NSSLHA’s mission to inspire, empower, and support students in communication sciences and disorders programs.
The NSSLHA Chapter at ESU is dedicated to raising awareness of communication disorders, raising funds for national and local charities, and providing service learning to its members.
