Kimberly S. Adams, Ph.D., professor of political science at East Stroudsburg University has been appointed to National Organization for Women Political Action Committee (NOW PAC), in Washington, DC.
The Political Action Committee is the electoral politics arm of NOW. NOW PAC endorses and supports feminist candidates for federal office that are committed to NOW’s values and priorities. The PAC comprises of eight members including two National NOW officers, three board members, and three at-large members, appointed by the president.
Dr. Adams was also appointed to NOW’s Racial Justice Committee. In this capacity, she authored and presented a resolution at NOW’s annual conference in Minneapolis (July 18-21) on the over-criminalization of young girls and women of color. The resolution was passed in the issues hearing phase and was subsequently passed by the membership at large.
During the conference, Adams also co-facilitated a discussion of Ijeoma Oluo’s work, “So You Want to Talk about Race”.
Whether teaching about women and politics, presenting research or publishing on female agenda-setting behavior in legislative bodies, marching for gender equity, or registering voters, Adams has devoted her career to the advancement of women and minorities in society. Growing up in Mississippi, she learned coordinated and consistent activism brought about positive change. When she was 11 years old Adams worked on her first campaign placing flyers on the doors of neighbors to support a local woman running for city council. From those early days to her current role as a political science professor at ESU, she has remained committed to eradicating barriers to the full inclusion of women and minorities in our society. She is a member of NOW, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., the American Women’s News Club, the National Conference of Black Political Scientists, the American Association of Blacks in Higher Education, and a charter member of the National Museum of African American History and Culture. Adams serves as an American Fellowships Selection Panelist for the American Association of University Women (AAUW), where she evaluates, ranks, and recommends fellowship and grant proposals, submitted by women from all over the country, to receive funding for their research. She is an active with Katrina’s Dream, an organization geared to securing passage of the Equal Rights Amendment. Adams shares her love for and knowledge of women and politics as a speaker locally, nationally, and internationally. She also serves on the general council for the Northeast Political Science Association.
