East Stroudsburg University’s Office of Wellness Education and Prevention is teaming up with Women’s Resources of Monroe County, Inc. to hold a community candlelight vigil, Shine a Light for Healing, to honor victims and survivors of domestic violence/intimate partner violence. The event will take place at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, October 20, 2020 at the Courthouse at 610 Monroe Street in Stroudsburg, Pa.
“Domestic violence has been an epidemic before COVID-19, however, the pandemic has caused a rise in relationship violence cases,” says Laura Suits, coordinator of ESU’s wellness education and prevention office. “It’s important to note that even though quarantine restrictions are being lifted, that does not mean the abuse will simply end. Domestic violence thrives in silence, that’s why it is vital to be an active bystander – if you see something, say something.”
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and Women’s Resources of Monroe County, Inc. works together with the community to highlight the issue of domestic/intimate partner violence. “Our trained counselor/advocates are on the front lines with victims and survivors, no one has to go through this alone,” says Lauren Peterson, Executive Director of Women’s Resources. “Our 24-hour hotline has continued to operate throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, providing a first line of safety for victims. Hotline calls continue to rise now that the stay-at-home restrictions are being lifted, and we want people to know that you can reach out, any time day or night, and we will be there to help you.”
The Shine a Light for Healing vigil is open to the public at no cost. For more information about this event, please contact Suits at (570) 422-3298 or lsuits@esu.edu
