The Center for Multicultural Affairs and Inclusive Education at East Stroudsburg University announced Shauntey James, Ph.D., J.D., will be this year’s Black History Month keynote speaker. The keynote address is titled “Black Women: Chattel?” and will be delivered virtually, via Zoom, on Wednesday, February 16 at 6 p.m. The event is free to the public.
Dr. Shauntey James received a Ph.D. in sociology with an emphasis in criminology, criminal justice, and feminist theory from Western Michigan University in 2000 and a J.D. from Thomas Cooley Law School in 2014. Her teaching experience has enabled her to present on the local, state, and national levels. One of her most distinguished honors was being an Oxford Round Table Delegate. She has been featured on Good Day PA and co-authored a book with Dr. Alana Van Gundy entitled The History, Evolution, and Current State of Female Offenders: Recommendations for the Field.
In her address to ESU, James will discuss how Black women have been shackled by their multiple identities, limiting their access to opportunities within the social structure. The metaphorical binding of this population has allowed concerns that center on the intersection of gender, class, race, and sexuality to be ignored. The purposeful choice to ignore the intersection of various oppressions may stem historically from black women being defined as chattel and never truly emerging from this status.
