ESU Department of Communication Holds 25th Annual Scholarship and Awards Ceremony

On April 20, East Stroudsburg University’s department of communication held the 25th annual Communication Scholarship and Awards Ceremony which included an induction of students into the Gamma Chi chapter of the Lambda Pi Eta National Communication Honor Society. At the ceremony, Alyssa Calilap’12, global employee experience lead at Sanofi Consumer Healthcare, delivered the keynote speech. Calilap spoke on navigating the transition from college to career.

The ceremony recognized the academic achievements of the most outstanding students studying communication. The membership criteria for Gamma Chi chapter of the Lambda Pi Eta National Communication Honor Society is completion of a minimum of 12 credits in communication, an overall GPA of 3.0 or better, and a major GPA of 3.25 or better.

A total of eight communication majors were inducted as new members into the Gamma Chi chapter of Lambda Pi Eta: Taylor Black, a junior from Abington, Pa.; Kendell Bowman, a senior from East Stroudsburg, Pa.; Xzy-Nayé Campbell, a junior from East Stroudsburg, Pa.; Sophie Dorman, a junior from Hackettstown, N.J.; Emily Egan, a senior from Aston, Pa.; George McFadden, a senior from Doylestown, Pa.; Taylor Miller, a senior from Stroudsburg, Pa.; and Joelle Wolfrum, a senior from Oxford, N.J.

In addition to induction into the honor society, the department also recognized scholarship and award recipients. Campbell was awarded the Gretchen Fee Jackson ’02 Communication Studies Endowed Scholarship; Dorman was awarded The Academic Excellence in Communication Annual Scholarship; Travis Wolfe, a junior communication major from Bushkill, Pa., and Connor Duelley, a majoring in communication junior from Easton, Pa., were  awarded The Department of Communication Endowed Scholarship; Katie Coyne, a graduate student studying communication from Lords Valley, Pa., and Nicholas Ortiz, a graduate student studying communication from Coatesville, Pa., were awarded the Excellence in Advanced Communication Research Annual Scholarship; Mehki Williams, a sophomore majoring in communication from Nutley, N.J., was awarded the John/Marshall Annual Scholarship; and Patrick Harvey, a junior majoring in communication from Tobyhanna, Pa., and Calla Sandt, a sophomore majoring in communication from Canadensis, Pa., were awarded the Colleen Fleming Endowed Scholarship. Janiyah Chatman, a senior majoring in communication from Bangor, Pa., received the Journal Award. Kobe Jenkins, a junior majoring in communication from Harrisburg, Pa., received the Chase News Director Annual Scholarship, and Geoffrey Ioannidis, a senior majoring in environmental studies from Stroudsburg, Pa., received the WESS Program Director Service Award for outstanding efforts in WESS and Broadcasting.

The Best Minors in Communication certificates were awarded to Richermy Batista, a sophomore majoring in political science from Hazleton, Pa.; Haley Delia, a sophomore majoring in psychology from Liverpool, N.Y.; Rebecca James, a senior interdisciplinary studies major from Effort, Pa.; Vincent Romano, a sophomore majoring in marketing form Exton, Pa.; and Olivia Waszkielewicz, a junior majoring in nursing from East Stroudsburg, Pa.

Academic Recognition certificates were awarded to Kaiya Andrukitis, a freshman communication major from Old Forge, Pa.; Amanda Duke, a freshman communication major from Stroudsburg, Pa.; Delaney Hibbits, a sophomore English major from Lyndhurst, N.J.; Nia Marrow, a senior communication major from Allentown, Pa.; McFadden; Sarah Rybacki, a senior majoring in communication from Pottstown, Pa.; Alessia Valente, a senior sport management major from Santa Paula, Calif.; and Wolfrum.

PRSSA (Public Relations Student Society of America) Distinguishing Service Certificates were given to their officers, Francesca Palmeri, a senior communication major from Morganville, N.J.; Egan, Marrow, and Wolfrum. While receiving their award, Palmeri and Egan presented a donation of $500 collected through their “Hand in Hand for Tukey and Syria” fundraiser.
