A group of students from East Stroudsburg University’s sport management program recently took their skills to the national stage, competing in a competition that tests their talent and shows their potential.

Five students attended the Commission on Sport Management Accreditation (COSMA) conference at Flagler College, St. Augustine, Florida. While there, they competed in the conference’s prestigious Case Cup Competition, earning second place among seven participating universities.

The team – Avery Francis, a graduate student studying sport administration from Saylorsburg, Pa.; Max Kochenash, a junior majoring in sport management from Nazareth, Pa.; Gianna Mascaro, a junior majoring in sport management from Philadelphia, Pa.; Dominic Puccio, senior majoring in sport management from Easton, Pa.; and Jared Salazar, a senior majoring in sport management from Brodheadsville, Pa.– developed a comprehensive strategic proposal for the St. John’s County Sports Tournament Complex focused on enhancing player safety, strengthening crisis management protocols, and advancing long-term sustainability. Dr. Jaedeock Lee, professor and chair of the sport management department, and Dr. Edward Arner, assistant professor of sport management, provided guidance throughout the case development process. Their presentation outlined several innovative strategies, including the integration of Perry Weather services, the development of a comprehensive Emergency Action Plan and Crisis Management Plan, and sustainability initiatives centered on water conservation and recycling.

During the conference, Dr. Arner also contributed to the conference’s scholarly dialogue by presenting his Sport Podcast project to fellow sport management academics. And, all five students were inducted into the Chi Sigma Mu Student Honor Society during the conference reception, recognizing their academic achievement and professional promise.

The Commission on Sport Management Accreditation is a specialized accrediting body whose purpose is to promote and recognize excellence in sport management education worldwide in colleges and universities at the baccalaureate, master’s and doctoral levels through specialized accreditation. They host an annual academic conference to share teaching strategies and research ideas and findings, as well as providing sport management students with learning opportunities like presentations and case study competitions.
