East Stroudsburg University political science students welcomed Monroe County Commissioner David C. Parker to their American Government class on October 8 where he discussed the local events held in honor of America’s semi quincentennial (250th) anniversary.
Commissioner Parker explained the significance of General Sullivan’s March at Brinker’s Mill in Sciota during the Revolutionary War and encouraged students to visit the 18 Historical Markers in Monroe County. According to the Monroe County America 250 website, “This is an adventure across 18 iconic historical markers that tell the story of our community, heroes, milestones, and unforgettable moments.” The students were given handouts that include the Monroe County Historic Markers Trail Passport where they can scan QR codes and learn more about the sites. Students who visit all 18 sites could earn a chance to win $250 gift card.
He also invited the class to attend the “1776 the Musical” at Notre Dame High School, Oct. 23-25. Commissioner Parker also discussed his time in the state legislature and some of the legislation he championed.
“I am so pleased to have hosted Commissioner Parker in my American Government class and watch him interact with our students,” said Dr. Kimberly S. Adams, professor of political science. “We had discussed the Revolutionary War and the Declaration of Independence in earlier classes, so they seemed very interested in his presentation. I know that some of them will visit the historical markers and take him up on his offer to provide a few free tickets to ‘1776 the Musical,’ later this month.”
