East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania (ESU) will host a free course on recognizing and understanding concussions on Saturday, February 23, 2013, from 9 – 11 a.m. in the Niedbala Auditorium of the Warren E. ’55 and Sandra Hoeffner Science and Technology Center. This course is open to all, including parents, who want to learn more about concussion.
The purpose of the course is to provide information and a better understanding of concussions and their severity; recognizing concussion signs and symptoms; testing for concussion; treatment, including steps for returning to activity; and how to develop or revise concussion management and prevention policies.
The course is intended for coaches, athletes, parents, school administrators, physicians, school nurses, other health care professionals, sports officials and anyone who wants to learn more about concussions. Athletic trainers are encouraged to attend to learn how to design effective concussion policies with their physicians and school administrators.
The course is sponsored by the ESU Department of Athletic Training, the Brain Injury Association of Pennsylvania and the Pennsylvania Athletic Trainers’ Society, and meets the Safety in Youth Sports Act requirements for concussion education for coaches. It is being offered as an alternative to the approved online programs offered by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the National Federation of State High School Associations and the Pennsylvania Athletic Trainers’ Society. Attendees will receive a course completion certificate and can be used for one Continuing Education Unit for athletic trainers, as well.
