Gregory B. Dwyer, Ph.D., professor of exercise science at East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania (ESU), is author and senior editor of a new book titled, ACSM’s Certification Review Manual (Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 2013). The published text serves as an ultimate resource for students or candidates who wish to take one of the main certification tests offered by the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM). The book provides preparation material for the following tests: Certified Personal Trainer (CPT), Certified Health Fitness Specialist (HFS), and Certified Clinical Exercise Specialist (CES). It also includes case studies that help reinforce concepts the candidate may see on the certification exams and provides practice tests that contain questions for each of the certification levels.
According to ACSM, it is the largest sports medicine and exercise science organization in the world and is dedicated to advancing and integrating scientific research to provide educational and practical applications of exercise science and sports medicine.
Dr. Dwyer has been an exercise science professor at ESU for over 15 years, teaching both undergraduate and graduate courses. He currently teaches such classes as exercise physiology, health-related physical fitness assessment and programming, adult fitness seminar, and graded exercise testing and exercise prescription.
Dwyer is an ACSM Fellow and is certified by the organization as an exercise test technologist, preventive/rehabilitative clinical exercise specialist, exercise program director and registered clinical exercise physiologist. He has been a frequent lecturer at various ACSM workshops and is a member of the organization’s Committee on Certification and Registry Board and Publications Subcommittee.
ESU offers undergraduate and graduate degree programs accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs and has received endorsement by both the ACSM and the National Strength and Conditioning Association. Through the exercise science curriculum, laboratory experiences, applied research, internships, and student-faculty interactions, the ESU Department of Exercise Science offers programs of study leading to the bachelor of science degree in exercise science with a concentration in exercise physiology or sport and exercise conditioning. The exercise physiology concentration prepares students for more advanced studies in exercise science. The concentration in sport and exercise conditioning prepares students for work in the health and fitness professions. Graduate programs are also offered with the master of science in clinical exercise physiology and the master of science in exercise science.
