East Stroudsburg University Hosting Earth Day and Bicycle Awareness Day With Bands, Events, E-Recycling April 26

East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania (ESU) invites the local community to campus to celebrate Earth Day and Bicycle Awareness Day on Friday, April 26 from noon to 4 p.m. on the ESU Quad, located in the center of campus, weather permitting. In the event of inclement weather, events will be moved indoors to the Keystone Room located in the Center for Hospitality Management adjacent to the Quad. In conjunction with this celebration, the Monroe County Municipal Waste Management Authority will sponsor a free electronic recycling program. The event is open to the public at no cost.

ESU Clubs and community groups will have booths with information on eco-friendly topics. There will also be lectures and demonstrations on a variety of sustainability topics, environmental trivia, and “bring your own shirt” tie dying. Live entertainment will include performances by FM Waves, Ken Hatt, and Bedside Morale. The ESU Ultimate Frisbee club will sponsor a Frisbee tournament on the ESU Linden Quad.Participants will have the ability to register a bike on campus. A limited number of free T-shirts are available to those who register a bike that day. Bike registration is being sponsored by the ESU transportation Committee. This sub-committee of the University Sustainability Commission is composed of faculty, administrators, support staff and students who examine ways to increase and improve awareness of and accessibility to more sustainable/alternative transportation options such as walking, biking ride-sharing and transit on campus.

President Welsh will kick off the event by delivering a welcome to the students, faculty, and surrounding community. Ray Milewski, Ph.D., an associate professor of biological sciences, will give a presentation called, “Saving Rare Plants” and Terry Master, Ph.D., a professor of biological sciences, will present “Species Reintroduction in the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area.” The community is invited to participate in electronic recycling event sponsored by the Monroe County Municipal Waste Management Authority, an organization that works with the residents of Monroe County on recycling and waste removal issues. The event will be held in the parking area behind Laurel Hall from noon to 4 p.m. In addition to the recycling program, the Waste Authority will also be holding a contest in which one lucky winner will receive an Advanced Elements inflatable kayak paddler’s pack.
