The sisters of Alpha Omicron Pi at East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania will sponsor a care-package drive for deployed soldiers on May 3 and 4 at the Kemp Library from 3-5 p.m. (May 3) and 10 a.m. to noon (May 4). This initiative, called Sisters for Soldiers, is an effort taking place nationally by chapters of this sorority to assist Soldier’s Angels, a nonprofit organization that provides aid and comfort to the men and women of the United States Army, Marines, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, veterans and their families.
ESU junior and Alpha Omicron Pi member Shannon Blair of Allentown, Pa., is organizing this event. She says the sorority is encouraging members of the ESU campus community as well as friends and neighbors from the Pocono region to support our military. “It’s a great way for people to let US soldiers know they are appreciated,” says Blair.
Suggested donations items include magazines, books, puzzles, non-perishable food, T-shirts, gym shorts, toothpaste, decks of cards, Frisbees, footballs, soccer balls, calendars, and air fresheners for trucks and rooms.
According to its website http://www.soldiersangels.org/ the Soldier’s Angels organization was founded in 2003 by the mother of two American soldiers. Volunteers assist veterans, wounded and deployed personnel and their families in a variety of unique and effective ways including the sending of care packages and letters to “adopted” deployed service members.
