Steven J. Scheinman, M.D., president and dean of The Commonwealth Medical College (TCMC), will be the keynote speaker for the East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania (ESU) graduate commencement ceremony on Friday, May 17 at 7:00 p.m. in Koehler Fieldhouse. Dr. Scheinman, who joined TCMC in September 2012, is a nephrologist who has made major contributions to our understanding of the molecular genetics of kidney stones and a range of diseases causing chronic renal failure. His group described the condition now known as Dent’s disease and identified two of its causal genes.
Scheinman holds an A.B., summa cum laude, from Amherst College in Massachusetts and received his medical degree with honors from Yale University. He completed his residency in internal medicine at Yale-New Haven Hospital, was chief resident in internal medicine at Upstate and completed fellowships in nephrology at Upstate Medical Center and Yale-New Haven Hospital. He was an attending physician at University Hospital, Crouse-Irving Memorial Hospital and Veterans Administration Medical Center in Syracuse, New York.
Before coming to TCMC, Scheinman served as professor of medicine and pharmacology at SUNY Upstate Medical University and spent eight years as its senior vice president and dean of the College of Medicine. He has published more than 80 peer-reviewed articles, reviews, and book chapters on topics related to kidney disease and genetics. For most of his career he was principal investigator on grants funded by the National Institutes for Health (NIH), American Heart Association, and other agencies. He has been an invited speaker at numerous national and international meetings and a visiting professor at many prominent universities across the United States and abroad.
Scheinman has served on review boards for the NIH, American Society of Nephrology, American Federation for Medical Research, American Heart Association, and National Kidney Foundation, among others. He is a fellow of the American College of Physicians and of the American Society of Nephrology, and is an elected member of the American Society for Clinical Investigation. He was a gubernatorial appointee to the New York State Council on Graduate Medical Education, and has served on a number of national boards related to medical education. He continues to serve on the board of the National Resident Match Program.
Scheinman is an advocate on healthcare workforce issues and matters affecting medical schools. In October 2012, TCMC and East Stroudsburg University announced a collaborative degree program after several years of dialogue and milestone achievements between TCMC’s Department of Family, Community and Rural Health and ESU’s Department of Health Studies. This collaborative program has the potential to yield significant outcomes for the respective institutions, students, and the region.
Scheinman lives in Clarks Summit with his wife, Kelly. They have six children and two grandchildren.
