ESU Office of Multicultural Affairs and The Latino Heritage Month Committee Celebrate Latino Heritage Month

The East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania (ESU) Office of Multicultural Affairs and the Latino Heritage Month Committee will celebrate Latino Heritage Month in September and October on the ESU campus. For more information on any of ESU’s Latino Heritage Month celebration events, contact Cornelia Sewell, Coordinator for Multicultural Affairs, at 570-422-3896.

The month-long schedule of events is as follows:

  • Kick-off event – Saturday, September 14: Latina Women in Education Panel Discussion, 2-4 p.m. in Lower Dansbury. This discussion will explore triumphs and struggles Latina Women have working in the education field. Light refreshments will also be available. This event is free and open to the public.
  • Sunday, September 15: Mu Sigma Upsilon Sorority (MSU) hosts “Meet the Greeks” beginning at 3 p.m. on the quad. This event is free and open to the public.
  • Tuesday, September 17: Carlos Ojeda Jr. will speak at 7 p.m. in Stroud Hall 117. Ojeda is a motivational speaker who emphasizes empowerment and leadership. He is the founder of CoolSpeak, a leading youth engagement organization delivering key programs and events to keep students inspired, parents involved and teachers engaged. He is also the author of The Power of Youth.  This event is free and open to the public.
  • Wednesday, September 18: Zumba-Tasting Event in the Mattioli Recreation Center on from 8-10 p.m. This event will offer a Zumba class along with small tastings of authentic Spanish food and trivia. ESU faculty, staff, students and alumni with a valid eCard are invited and welcome to bring one guest each (must be 18 or older with photo ID).
  • Beginning Thursday, September 19: The Latino Heritage Month (LHM) Film Festival will run every Tuesday and Thursday at 7 p.m. in Beers lecture Hall.  The LHM Film Festival will conclude on Thursday, October 17 at 8 p.m. in Beers Lecture Hall with ESPN’s The Clemente Effect. This event is free and open to the public.
  • Friday, September 27: Latin Dance Lessons in the Mattioli Recreation Center from 7-9 p.m.
  • Wednesday, October 9: The ¿Y Tu Abuela, Donde Está? Honor Ceremony will take place at 6 p.m. in the Keystone Room. This ceremony will provide an opportunity for students to honor someone of Latino descent that has impacted their lives in some way. Students are encouraged to invite a guest from the community or a family member that has inspired them.
  • Thursday, October 10: MSU and Chi Upsilon Sigma Sorority (CUS) will host “Let’s Talk Food and Culture” in Lower Dansbury from 5-7 p.m.
  • Friday, October 11: Latin Explosion party in Lower Dansbury from 10 p.m.-2 a.m. This event is free and open to the public (must be 18 or older with photo ID).
