Economic students from East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania made a trip to the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) on Friday, October 4. The trip was organized by the university’s Economics Club and the Department of Economics. The students, accompanied by Pats Neelakantan, Ph.D., chairperson and professor of economics, also visited the Museum of Finance while they were in New York City.
At the Museum of Finance, the students learned about the U.S. financial market, economic challenges and the role of regulatory agencies such as the Federal Reserve.
“Learning about stocks is one thing, but actually being on the floor where millions of dollars’ worth of transactions are occurring right before your eyes was surreal,” said Alek Liskov, president of ESU’s Economics Club.
The students spent almost two hours at the NYSE, where they learned how the world’s largest stock market functions. They also toured the building where they met Steven Wheeler, director of corporate responsibility, as well as designated market makers, who work on the trading floor. James Woods, a designated market maker for Goldman Sachs, told the students about his career and how he pursued his dreams.
It took nearly seven months to put the educational tour together, Neelakantan said
“The students organized this whole trip and worked very hard to pull it off,” Neelakantan said.
