Individuals from ESU’s chapter of Sigma Phi Omega, a national honor society in gerontology, completed a pet food drive for Monroe County Meals on Wheels recently. LuAnn Batson-Magnuson, Ph.D., assistant professor of Speech-Language Pathology at East Stroudsburg University, recently presented research findings at the American Speech-Language Hearing Association’s national convention in Chicago.

Batson-Magnuson’s study examined the way in which language tasks, which were administered through a pre-kindergarten screener, could predict future reading performance with the hopes professionals could identify at-risk children sooner.

ESU’s chapter of Sigma Phi Omega, a national honor society in gerontology, completed a pet food drive for Monroe County Meals on Wheels recently.  The food will be given to individuals who receive Meals on Wheels and also need food for their pets. Sigma Phi Omega faculty adviser Elaine Shuey, Ph.D., ESU speech-language pathology professor and department chair, helped organize the food drive.

ESU students taking part in the charity work were Paulina McFadden, speech-language pathology graduate student from Lebanon, Pa., who is chapter president of Sigma Phi Omega; Megan Hau, a chapter member and speech-language pathology graduate student from Coudersport, Pa.; and Kira Carlisle, chapter secretary and senior majoring in speech-language pathology from Spring Grove, Pa.

Earlier this month, ESU’s Center for Research and Economic Development received one of seven grants awarded by the Blue Ribbon Foundation of Blue Cross of Northeastern Pennsylvania Board of Directors. The $6,731, one-year grant, which was written by Batson-Magnuson and Rachel Wolf, Ph.D., an ESU assistant professor in the speech-language pathology department, will be used to conduct speech-language-hearing screenings for 276 preschool children and their siblings at six Monroe County Head Start centers and the Annual Head Start Health Fair in Monroe County. The screenings will be administered by ESU’s Speech-Language Pathology Department at ESU.
