Eve T. Salzberg, a graduating senior with a double major in biochemistry and chemical biotechnology from Cherry Hill, N.J., was selected from a pool of student speaker candidates to serve as East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania’s undergraduate student speaker for the winter commencement ceremony on Saturday, December 17, at 8:45 a.m. in Koehler Fieldhouse. Undergraduate student speaker candidates must have a minimum 3.0 grade point average entering the fall semester; a demonstrated record of service to the university community and a record of citizenship and cooperation; demonstrated evidence of meaningful extra/co-curricular involvement and must be in good academic standing.

Salzberg came to ESU with the hopes of leaving the school and herself better than when she entered. While a student she served as the chair of the academic affairs committee on Student Senate, president and founder of the Jewish Student Organization, president of the Pre-med Club, secretary and vice-president of the Chemistry Club, and treasurer of the Biotechnology Club. She was also involved in the honors student organization, Active Minds, the Laurel Hall community board, the Outings Club, the Gymnastics Club and Rotaract. She worked as a peer leader at Stony Acres for three years and was a guide and mentor for incoming freshmen and transfer students who participated in the Quest program, which is the program that gave Salzberg the confidence to get involved at ESU her freshman year.

In 2013, Salzberg was a recipient of the PASSHE Summer Study Abroad Scholarship. She studied music history and international mass media in London, Salzburg, Vienna, Venice, and Rome. During the 2013-14 academic year, she served as the undergraduate representative on the University Assessment Committee (UAC), which focused on institutional assessment, program assessment, professional development and general education assessment. In 2015 she was named Who’s Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities, which recognizes students based on their academics, service to the community, leadership in extracurricular activities and potential for continued success.

During her junior year, Salzberg saw the need for a student group for those of the Jewish faith, so she took the initiative to reinstate the Jewish Student Organization on campus. She worked closely with the Student Activity Association for Global Week and arranged for an Auschwitz survivor to speak. This experience gave Salzberg the opportunity to share her Jewish culture with the community as well as learn about the different cultures of her peers.

“One thing I truly admire about ESU is that it provided me with an education beyond a textbook,” Salzberg said. “I will leave college with degrees in biochemistry and chemical biotechnology, a minor in philosophy, an enriched study abroad experience, immense leadership skills, friends of all different backgrounds and a future full of opportunities.”
